white Supremacy and white Women in the Nonprofit Sector

When power is concentrated in well-intentioned white women leaders and institutions, what can we do to address pervasive white supremacy?

The majority of nonprofit leadership (including boards) identify as white. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women have a different (more difficult) fight for equity in the nonprofit sector (and beyond). To achieve gender equality across the board, we need to address the ways in which white supremacy norms are perpetuated in our organizations. While white women have faced gender oppression, there’s also a need to recognize how there could be an internalized sense of racial superiority.

March is Gender Equality and Women's History Month. This is a time to celebrate women's (ALL women - white and BIPOC) contributions to society and recommit to the fight for gender equity.

This free webinar will provide awareness on what it can look like for white women leaders to unpack their biases and internalized superiority, how to call out/in white women in leadership, and how to disrupt the white dominant habits and make room for BIPOC women to have a seat at the table.

Book Babble - Inventing Latinos: A New Story of American Racism

Inventing Latinos: A New Story of American Racism, by Laura E. Gómez is a much-needed examination of the Latino/a/e/x identity. Latinos are the second largest demographic in the United States, but people often are confused—is Latino a race? An ethnicity? Whom does this identity include? Gómez explains to us that Latino is indeed a race and that anti-Latino racism was the catalyst for this umbrella identity.

Let's dive deep into this thought-provoking book together to talk about the social construct of race and how it's changed over time for the Latino community.

How can we better understand our race-based traumas to move toward healing? What actions can we take to build solidarity across the Global Majority community?

Join us for this training and conversation on:

Book Babble: Permission to Come Home

Mental health is heavily stigmatized in Asian American communities. And when people try to seek services and support, there is little available even in cities like San Francisco and New York. If we add in elements of intersectionality (ie. socio-economic class, sexual orientation, etc.), the problem becomes much worse.

What are some of the ways we can destigmatize mental health and reclaim it as Asian Americans? How can we begin to heal as a community? What are some actions that nonprofit organizations can take to be supportive of Asian American staff and clients?

Join us for this book babble in celebration of Asian Pacific American History Month, and let's dive into this discussion. Leave with some tangible action steps that you can take professionally as we move to destigmatize mental health in Asian America.

Moving from Human Resources to People & Culture

Moving from Human Resources to People & Culture

Over the past year, nonprofit organizations have been shifting the way they're thinking about their staff. For far too long, human resources (HR) has been there to protect organizations. HR in and of itself is rooted in the enslavement of Black/African Americans, and then the continued oppression of historically excluded groups over the past century.

Traditional policies and practices in the nonprofit sector (i.e. 40-hour work week, annual performance evaluations, hierarchical supervision structure, low pay due to funding, etc.) primarily serves to uphold white cultural norms and the continued systemic oppression of historically marginalized communities.

Despite the shift of nonprofits towards diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging over the past two years, most non-profit leadership is still over 90% White. There's a reason why we continue to use the same practices year after year to hire people but then ask ourselves why we're still not diversified. To practice equity and inclusion within nonprofit human resources means accepting that it's going to take culture change. Join us for this workshop and learn about what your organization needs to do in its next steps.

Goals:

  • Discuss how white supremacy and white cultural norms influence practices in human resources/people & culture in the nonprofit sector

  • Share the different ways that we can start building a culture of equity and inclusion in nonprofits

white Supremacy & white Women in the Nonprofit Sector

When power is concentrated in well-intentioned white women leaders and institutions, what can we do to address pervasive white supremacy?

March is Women's History Month. While this is a time to celebrate women's contributions to society and to recommit to the fight for gender equity, we know that women of color have a different (more difficult) fight for equity in the nonprofit sector (and beyond). White supremacy is embedded into our country's very existence, and the nonprofit sector is not exempt.

Given that across the country the majority of nonprofit leadership (including boards) identify as white, we need to address the ways in which white supremacy norms are perpetuated in our organizations. While white women may fall into an oppressed gender identity, this does not mean they have avoided internalizing a sense of racial superiority.

This webinar will provide awareness on what it can look like for white leaders to unpack their biases and internalized superiority, how to call out/in white women in leadership, and how to disrupt the white dominant habits and make room for women of color to have a seat at the table.

Fiona's Book Babble: The Deep

The Deep, by Rivers Solomon, with Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Johnathan Snipes is an Afrofuturist story of the water-dwelling descendants of enslaved pregnant African women thrown overboard by their enslavers. These descendants live idyllic lives in the deep, but for the main character, Yetu, she holds the traumatic, painful, and wonderful memories of their ancestors. This demanding role takes Yetu on a journey to discover truths about her past--and about the future of her people.

Let's dive deep into this thought-provoking book together to talk about intergenerational trauma, healing, and community. How can we sustain ourselves while holding onto the knowledge of our past? What do sustainable caregiving networks look like? How can we approach conflict with a trauma-informed lens?

The Difference Between Unpacking Anti-Blackness and Doing Anti-Racism Work

The Difference Between Unpacking Anti-Blackness and Doing Anti-Racism Work

February is Black History Month. While this is a time to celebrate the Black community, a formal federal recognition of Black History Month does not right the wrongs of the centuries of struggle for the Black community. White supremacy is embedded into our country’s very existence, and we still have yet to live up to the principles that our country was founded on.

In the 2020s, we've seen an increase in organizations and companies engaging in anti-racism work (whether authentic work or performative). Still, anti-racism work does not necessarily mean that work is being done to address anti-Blackness.

This webinar will provide awareness of what it can look like for organizations to authentically engage in unpacking their anti-Blackness, and strive to become a pro-Black organization.

Book Talk - 1619 Project: The Systems of Race and Caste in Nonprofits

How do the systems of race and caste continue to show up in nonprofits today?

The 1619 Project, by Nikole Hannah-Jones, speaks directly to our current moment, "contextualizing the systems of race and caste that still define so much of American life today. It reveals the hidden truths around our nation’s founding and construction—and the way that the legacy of slavery did not end with emancipation, but continues to shape contemporary American life".

How do these systems continue to perpetuate white supremacy and white culture in nonprofits? What should white-led nonprofit leaders do to dismantle racism? And for Global Majority leaders, what are our responsibilities in this moment?

Please read Nikole Hannah-Jones' book, The 1619 Project, prior to this book talk.

Please note that this event is on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 from 4:30pm-6:00pm PT/7:30pm-9pm ET.

BIPOC Collective Solidarity Institute

The Institute is specifically designed for individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) working on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in nonprofit organizations AND are working to shift their organizations towards having anti-racist and anti-oppressive cultures.

Oftentimes, BIPOC staff in nonprofits (particularly those in white-led and mainstream nonprofits) feel isolated and unsupported. Recognizing that a majority of nonprofit boards, leaders, and funders are predominantly white, we believe there needs to be affinity spaces for BIPOC staff to come together in solidarity for support, brainstorming, and growth.

This 6-month cohort runs from May 2022 - November 2022. We meet monthly on the 4th Tuesdays of every month from 10:00AM - 1:00PM PT/ 1:00PM - 4:00PM ET.

The first session will be on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.
